Golf Team Benefits from Increased Participation

In the past, the boys golf team has struggled with low participation. This year they will have a full team.

“So, this year we have a full team. We have 12 solid players and a couple alternative players as well and we’ll have six varsity and then six JV players during our matches this season,” coach Steven Kretz said.

Coach Kretz says this year will be their biggest team in a long time.

“So, this is my second year as the head coach. It’s the largest team I’ve ever fielded. I know in the last 10 years talking with the previous coach this is our largest team. Typically, we will have six to eight players, but this is the first year we’ve been able to field a full JV and a full varsity team,” Kretz said.

With no seniors on the team there is still room for growth. However, it’s taken a lot of effort in recruiting to get to this point.

“I think recruiting on my part and more specifically recruiting from the players themselves. I pulled a lot of guys over from the baseball team as well guys that were playing previously,” Kretz said.

The team has already posted their best finish in over a decade at the Auburn Hills tournament, with the varsity team finishing at the top of all Wichita-area schools. With more players this year who knows what might happen next year.
