In the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many industries and education is no exception. Apps like ChatGPT, Meta AI and Snapchat AI, along with AI-powered features on search engines like Google, are increasingly integrated into the learning process.
While some students may use AI for academic dishonesty, many utilize it as a valuable tool to enhance their work, ensuring accuracy and clarity in assignments.
“I have used AI, but not as a cheating tool, more as a utility to fix grammar or cohesiveness,” Korban Lea (12) said.
However, the misuse of AI for plagiarism has consequences.
“[My friend] ended up getting a zero on his assignment and was sent to In-School Suspension for arguing with the teacher,” Axel Flores (12) said.
But how are teachers able to tell whether or not a student is using AI? Detecting AI usage in assignments is a challenge that many teachers are still learning to address.
“I was able to tell because the way that they speak and how they write in their notebooks was nothing like how they produced when they were typing,” English teacher LeAndra Poole said.
“Usually it’s vocabulary words I know they don’t know, I will then put it into an AI checker to confirm,” English teacher Courtney Dold said.
As the use of AI continues to grow and expand in the future, students must learn how to use AI correctly. While it may seem like an asset to use to help with assignments, it also has its disadvantages for students’ education.
“If we keep AI the way it is now, though AI will surely have a negative impact on students as they find themselves more and more dependent on it to complete assignments,” Stefano Diaz (12) said. “If we focus on using AI to teach and assist then it can be greatly beneficial to students.”
While the challenges students face with AI-powered academic dishonesty, the potential of using AI as a learning tool are undeniable. By educating students to use AI responsibly as long as integrating it into lessons, Staff can prepare students for a future where AI will be an integral part of their lives.
