For the first time in 15 years, the boys varsity soccer team are the Greater Wichita Athletic League champions with an undefeated regular season record of 15-0-1.
“It feels good, coming in as a freshman, this is what we’ve always wanted, and I’m just happy we did it in the last season we could,” forward Nathan Calderon (12) said.
“I feel amazing. Before the season, I told the boys I was like I think we can do it, I didn’t see anyone on the schedule that we can lose to, and I was right. Maybe they didn’t believe it as much as I did, but I kept in the belief,” midfielder Jacob Lacio (12) said.
While this title may have come as a surprise to some, many of the seniors currently on the team started this journey together since their freshman year.
“Being the captain, a lot of people look up to me, but these guys don’t know that I look up to them as well. I just do it in silence, I don’t want to feel weak when I’m asking questions, but I watch them, I learn from them, and I love it. They’re like my brothers,” midfielder Diego Macias (12) said.
While this title means a great deal to the team, it also holds significant importance to head coach Cody Fitch.
“Its very emotional because I’ve seen them, I still remember when they showed up as 14 year old freshman in that first summer, and to see them come all this way and how much they’ve matured, and how much better they got, and how much it mean to them too, it really makes it mean a lot more,” Fitch said.
Despite the season coming to an unfortunate end in an overtime loss to East, the team has one message to those who supported them all along.
“I’d say thank you for everything. A lot of work that we put in, people don’t recognize it. Some sports do a lot better than others and luckily this year is our year. We are finally getting that recognition so I want to thank everybody for that,” left winger Sami Kasri (12) said.
Congratulations to the 2024 Southeast boys soccer team on this wonderful season.
