Swimming has been going on at southeast for 3 years now and it looks like they are starting off good
“Yeah, it’s been a great season so far this year. they’ve really been focusing on their technique and trying to really clean up their dives,” swimming and diving coach Jarred Gaskill said.
Here at Southeast, we have two highly ranked divers. Both Jeremey Johnson and Henry Hover have already qualified for state.
“Oh yeah, by far. a few years ago, we didn’t even make the state. Last year Jeremey and Henry made it to state but we didn’t make finals. This year we’ve got a really good shot at making finals for both of them,” Gaskill said.
Both Gaskill and the divers say they have improved a lot in the past few years.
“We’re all doing much better. we’ve had two qualify for state, me and henry, and then we’ll be going to finals this year,” diver Jeremey Johnson (12) said.
“We’ve gotten a lot better, especially at like technique and stuff like that,” Henry Hover (11) said.
Gaskill says the improvement is due to increased experience on the team along with an increase in athleticism.
“So they started off really fresh, a lot of them were trampoline park kids that knew how to flip so we had to teach them the style that we use here in diving. so that took a little while to kind of change their techniques. but then now that they’re kind of getting the hang of it, we’re just having to kind of clean it up for how diving is scored,” Gaskill.
Gaskill also says that they have been working hard on new techniques.
“They’ve really been focusing on their technique and trying to really clean up their dives, and then we have a lot of newer swimmers, so they’ve been having to work hard on learning a lot of the strokes and the different events that we have. And then our divers have probably the most experience on our team. And so a lot of them are learning a few new tricks, but for the most part, they are really just kind of cleaning up the dives that they already knew how to do,” Gaskill said.
The diving team has received new technology to help with them at their practices.
“We also got a little bit of equipment this year, we got a tv on a stand with little cameras to where they can watch every single dive that they dive so they can see the techniques that I’m talking about on each dive that they do,” Gaskill said.
The diving state final will be in Topeka on February 15-17.
