“It’s a place for the girls to be free and be able to explore and help each other and support each other in an environment that they are not used to and one that’s all accepting,” said Sydney Thurlow, who the sponsor for Her Voyage.
Her Voyage was created by Leah Zubairu (12) in hopes to help girls as they discover they are.
“So last year, second semester, January through May, I was trying to find how to make a sisterhood within Southeast. I thought about doing self-defense classes, learning about women’s health, etc. and I brought it up to a teacher and we got it together this year,” Zubairu said.
“Groups like this are necessary because everybody needs a place, everybody needs a voice and if we can give that to them, I think that is 100% important as with any other group,” Thurlow said.
Her Voyage recently held a fundraiser to promote the club and attract new members.
“It’s really beneficial because you get to meet other girls, like yourself, and I think it’s a really good group to join,” member Tiana Hardwell (11) said.
At this point, most students that are in her voyage are seniors and they want to make sure the club keeps going after they graduate.
“I hope to see the younger girls that are in the club to really pull through because all the officers and the president are all seniors,” Yelitza Cervantes (12) said, “so I really hope to see pull through and since it’s Her Voyage first year being a club, I hope that they get to do more, and they get more opportunities.”
