A new club is available for students looking to reconnect with their cultural roots. The Native American Cultural Club was formed to spread awareness about Native American and Indigenous people and to disprove the myths and misconceptions of their ancestries.
“They just want to kind of give people a better understanding on where they come from and find pride in those things,” sponsor Kinsey Colclasure said. “So they just want to give a sense of understanding of where things originated and where people began, and just kind of get a little bit more rich in their ancestry, or if they don’t know it, they can still come and it doesn’t matter if they’re of any color or race.”
Student Native Representative Ray Roberts (9) says that anyone is welcome to join the club or become involved with the club’s efforts.
“So for non-native students, they’re able to come to the club to gain education to learn more and to support the club by being active in the activities that we present. And when we do like fundraisers in the hallways or after school, they can always come and support this,” Roberts said.
The club wants to incorporate different activities such as educational field trips which ensure respectful representation of Native American and Indigenous culture.
“So we’re gonna’ be doing little future trips to like movies,” co-president Nova Kliewer (9) said. “And we want to eventually take a trip to the Indian Museum, and like, see an actual powwow and see how that happens. So we want to see stuff like that there if we get enough money to fundraise for it. That’s something we eventually want to do.”
Students who are interested in joining the club or want to learn more information can talk to Mrs. Colclasure in room G208.
